10 Monsters That Inspire Dread

Mysterious creatures of the night – the stuff of nightmares! This list takes a look at ten monsters from history, myth and folklore that ought to scare the pants off us. I have tried to restrict the list to creatures that have not been presented on Listverse before, to keep things interesting. Be sure to tell us your own favorite (or rather, despised) monsters in the comments.

10. Cockatrice
Screen Shot 2011-07-21 At 1.32.53 Pm
The Cockatrice can cause death with a single glance. Reports indicate that anything catching sight of the lethal bird’s eyes is turned instantly to stone. Just as deadly is their poisonous saliva, which can fell even an elephant. Also known as a Basilisk, a Cockatrice has the head and feet of a cockerel and the tail of a serpent. The Cockatrice is believed to be the product of a seven-year-old cockerel’s egg, laid during a full moon, and then hatched for nine years by a serpent or toad. There are a few ways to protect oneself from a Cockatrice. One is to carry something reflective – like a mirror – and turn the creature’s gaze back on it. Another is to keep either a weasel or a cockerel nearby. The weasel is said to be the mortal enemy of the Cockatrice, While the crowing of the cockerel is even more effective as it causes the Cockatrice to have fatal fits and ultimately thrash itself to death.

9. Manticore
Manticore 1000
The manticore is a legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a red lion, a human head with three rows of sharp teeth (like a shark), and a trumpet-like voice. Other aspects of the creature vary from story to story. It may be horned, winged or both. The tail is that of either a dragon or a scorpion, and it may shoot poisonous spines to either paralyze or kill its victims. It devours its prey whole. It leaves no clothes, bones or possessions of the prey behind. The creature’s feet may be those of a dragon, but are most often described as the paws of a lion. Its size ranges from the size of a lion to the size of a horse. It is also mistaken as a bearded man when seen from a distance – a deception which makes it easy to fall victim to the creature.

8. Kelpie
Screen Shot 2011-07-21 At 1.18.26 Pm
The kelpie is a supernatural water horse from Celtic folklore, that is believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland. The horse’s appearance is strong, powerful and breathtaking. Its hide was supposed to be black (though in some stories it was white), and it will appear to be a lost pony, but can be identified by its constantly dripping mane. Its skin is like that of a seal, smooth, but is as cold as death when touched. Water horses are known to transform into beautiful women to lure men into their traps. The water horse is a common form of the kelpie, said to lure humans, especially children, into the water to drown and eat them. It performs this act by encouraging children to ride on its back. Once its victims fall into its trap, the kelpie’s skin becomes adhesive and it bears them into the river, dragging them to the bottom of the water and devouring them—except the heart or liver.

7. Soucouyant

Not only is the soucouyant scary – it is probably the most bizarre entry here. The soucouyant in Dominica, Trinidadian and Guadeloupean folklore, is a kind of vampire. The Soucouyant lives by day as an old woman at the end of the village. By night, however, she strips off her wrinkled skin, puts it in a mortar, and flies in the shape of a fireball through the darkness, looking for a victim. Still in the shape of a fireball, the soucouyant enters the home of her victim through the keyhole, or any crack or crevice. Soucouyants suck the blood of people from their arms, legs and other soft parts, while they sleep. If the soucouyant draws out too much blood from her victim, it is believed that the victim will die and become a soucouyant herself, or else perish entirely, leaving her killer to assume her skin. The soucouyant practices witchcraft, voodoo and black magic. Soucouyants trade the blood of their victims for evil powers with Bazil, the demon who resides in the silk cotton tree.

6. Umibōzu
Kuwana - The Sailor Tokuso And The Sea Monster
Umibōzu is a spirit in Japanese folklore. The Umibōzu is said to live in the ocean and capsize the ship of anyone who dares speak to it. This spirit’s name, which combines the character for “sea” with the character of “Buddhist monk,” is possibly related to the fact that the Umibōzu is said to have a large, round head, resembling the shaven heads of Buddhist monks. Alternatively, they are enormous Yōkai (spectres) that appear to shipwreck victims and fishermen. They are believed to be drowned priests, exhibit the shaven head and typically appears to be praying. It is usually reported as having a grey, cloud-like torso and serpentine limbs. As you can see from the image above, this is not a creature you want to bump into in the middle of the night.

5. Hidebehind
Hidebehind
A hidebehind is a nocturnal fearsome critter from American folklore that preys upon humans that wander the woods, and was credited for the disappearances of early colonial loggers when they failed to return to camp. As its name suggests, the hidebehind is noted for its ability to conceal itself. When an observer attempts to look directly at it, the creature hides again behind an object or the observer, and therefore can’t be directly seen; a feat it accomplishes by sucking in its stomach to a point where it is so slender that it can easily cover itself behind the trunk of any tree. The hidebehind uses this ability to stalk human prey without being observed, and to attack without warning. Their victims, including lumberjacks who frequent the forests, are dragged back to the creature’s lair to be devoured. The creature subsists chiefly upon the intestines of its victim. Tasty.

4. Bakeneko
Bake
Cats are meant to be furry and cute – but not when it is five feet high and shoots fireballs! A bakeneko (“monster-cat”) is, in Japanese folklore, a cat with supernatural abilities akin to those of the fox or raccoon dog. A cat may become a bakeneko in a number of ways: it may reach a certain age, be kept for a certain number of years, grow to a certain size, or be allowed to keep a long tail. A bakeneko is a cat that gains paranormal powers after certain circumstances. They also have the ability to eat (bigger or smaller) anything in its way, no matter what it is. Poison is its main food. A bakeneko will haunt any household it is kept in, creating ghostly fireballs, menacing sleepers, walking on its hind legs, changing its shape into that of a human, and even devouring its own mistress in order to shapeshift and take her place. When it is finally killed, its body may be as much as five feet in length. It also poses a danger if allowed into a room with a fresh corpse; a cat is believed to be capable of reanimating a body by jumping over it.

3. Draugr
Draugr
A draugr is an undead creature from Norse mythology. Draugar were believed to live in the graves of dead Vikings, being the body of the dead. As the graves of important men often contained a good amount of wealth, the draugr jealously guards his treasures, even after death. Draugar possess superhuman strength, can increase their size at will, and carry the unmistakable stench of decay. The draugr’s ability to increase its size also increased its weight, and the body of the draugr was described as being extremely heavy. Thorolf of Eyrbyggja Saga was “uncorrupted, and with an ugly look about him… swollen to the size of an ox,” and his body was so heavy that it could not be raised without levers. In folklore the draugar slay their victims through various methods including crushing them with their enlarged forms, devouring their flesh, devouring them whole in their enlarged forms, indirectly killing them by driving them mad, and drinking their blood. Animals feeding near the grave of a draugr may be driven mad by the creature’s influence.

2. Monstrous Races
Scan 2
Pliny (in his Natural History, 77AD) gives us the first accounts of monstrous races in his attempt to describe the various unknown peoples of foreign lands. Some of the races he describes are hairy choromandae, which make a terrifying gnashing noise, half-beasts and half men created by the gods to terrify men for their amusement, and perhaps most horrifyingly a race of creatures who feed exclusively on the milk of dog-headed men (cynocephalae). In medieval history we find men with chests in their heads, and gigantic men who roam about on one leg, but prefer to lie on their back using their giant foot to protect them from the sun (sciapods). Pictured above is a weird mix of a man with a head in his chest, mixed with a bird.

1. Tiamat
Marduktiamat
We are all familiar with dragons from various historical tales and myths, but Tiamat really takes the cake for inspiring terror. Tiamat comes to us from Babylonian mythology. She is often wrongly described as being a sea-serpent or dragon, but it is far worse than that. First, here is a description: “[Tiamat had] a tail, a thigh, “lower parts” (which shake together), a belly, an udder, ribs, a neck, a head, a skull, eyes, nostrils, a mouth, and lips. She has insides (possibly “entrails”), a heart, arteries, and blood.” She was made up of such a jumble of things that she truly was a creature of chaos. But it gets worse. Tiamat was so horrifying, so monstrous, and so dread-inspiring because, from her bizarre pseudo-human cum cryptozoological body, she gave birth to dragons, scorpion-men, merpeople (yes, that is a real word), and countless other horrifying things. The Tiamat myth says that she was eventually killed by the god Marduk, who then split her body in two forming heaven and earth.

10 Scariest Ghostly Images And Recordings

10 Scariest Ghostly Images And Recordings

There are few questions more perplexing than what happens to our spirits after we die. While many people refuse to believe in the supernatural, technology has now enabled us to capture varying degrees of proof of the existence of earth-bound spirits and ghosts. Whether you choose to believe the evidence or not is up to you!

1. The Tulip Staircase Ghost

The Tulip Staircase Ghost
In 1966, retired clergyman Rev. Ralph Hardy was taking a picture of the spiral staircase (known as the "Tulip Staircase") in the Queen's House section of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, when he captured this image. Experts analyzed the original negative and verified that it had not been tampered with or manipulated in any way.

This photo served as proof that the many ghostly encounters at the Queen's House were real. Footsteps, slamming doors, and the chanting voices of children are often heard around the staircase. Visitors to the museum have even been pinched by unseen fingers during their tour!

Full-body apparitions have been seen on many occasions; one such apparition appears to be mopping up blood from the bottom of the stairs. Historians say that 300 years ago, a maid was thrown from the top of the stairs and fell 50 feet to her death, which might explain the ghostly clean-up crew.

2. The Back Seat Ghost

The Back Seat Ghost
In 1959, Mabel Chinnery was visiting the grave of her mother in a British graveyard when she took a picture of her husband, who was waiting alone in the car.

It wasn't until Mrs. Chinnery had the film developed that they realized her husband hadn't been waiting alone after all. The picture shows a person wearing glasses sitting in the back seat, and Mrs. Chinnery immediately recognized the figure as being her mother -- the mother whose grave she had just visited.

A photographic expert who examined the print determined that the image of the woman was neither a reflection nor a double exposure, even going so far as to stake his reputation on the fact that the picture is genuine. (Link | Photo)

3. The Eastern State Penitentiary Ghost

The Eastern State Penitentiary Ghost
When the TAPS crew of the TV show Ghost Hunters visited Philadelphia's historic Eastern State Penitentiary, they captured this remarkable footage of something running up towards the camera and then turning and running back the other way. Check it out:

4. The Toys 'R' Us Ghost

The Toys 'R' Us Ghost
The Toys 'R' Us in Sunnyvale, CA, is home to a spirit named John, and that's him leaning against the wall in the photo above. This photo was taken during a TV filming of the show That's Incredible, and no one who was in the room at the time saw the man, yet he turned up on the infrared photograph.

Psychics like the renowned Sylvia Browne have visited the store multiple times and have conducted seances in which they found out John's name, etc. The story is that John was a preacher and a ranch hand back in the 1880's on the land where the store now sits. Reports of how he died vary, but the general consensus is that he bled to death while chopping wood.

Employees of the TRU say that John often plays pranks on them and on customers, including following people into the Ladies' room and turning on the water faucets, tossing dolls off the shelf, and whispering employees' names in their ear, only to have them turn and see no one standing near them. 5. Ghost of Grandpa

Ghost of Grandpa
Denise Russell took this photo of her grandmother in 1997. Her granny lived independently into her 90's, and during a family picnic just before her death, Denise snapped this picture. No one noticed the man standing behind her grandmother for over three years, but when they finally noticed him they recognized him to be none other than Denise's grandfather, who had been dead since 1984.

Old black and white photos of her grandfather confirmed their suspicions. (Link | Photo)

6. The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall

The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall
Taken in 1936 by Captain Provand and Indre Shira, this is perhaps the most famous ghostly image of all time, yet to this day no one has been able to disprove its authenticity. The photographers were visiting Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England, to take pictures for Country Life magazine when they captured the original lady of the house, Lady Dorothy Townsend, descending the staircase. Provand witnessed the apparition with his eyes first, then managed to lift his camera and take this famous photograph. (Link | Photo)

7. Ghost Baby

Ghost Baby
In 1946, a woman named Mrs. Andrews took this picture of her deceased daughter's gravestone in Queensland, Australia. Her daughter had been just 17 when she'd died the previous year. When the film was developed, Mrs. Andrews was shocked to see the image of an infant girl looking directly into her camera.

There had been no children in the cemetery that day, and Mrs. Andrews didn't know any babies whose pictures she'd have taken with her camera. She also remarked that the child did not look like her own daughter when her daughter was an infant.

Years later, Australian paranormal researcher Tony Healy investigated the case and found the graves of two infant girls very near to Mrs. Andrews' daughter's grave. (Link | Photo)

8. The Mount Washington Hotel

The Mount Washington Hotel
Opened in 1902, the Mount Washington Resort in Carroll, New Hampshire, is reportedly home to several spirits. Most notably, the ghost of a princess who stayed in the hotel during each summer is said to interact with guests quite frequently. The princess preferred the comfort of her own bed, and the bed remains in room 314 to this day.

Paranormal investigation crew TAPS (of Ghost Hunters) were the first crew to conduct an investigation of the grand hotel, and they produced some amazing proof of spirit manifestations. In this audio clip, taken in the famed Princess Suite, lead investigators Jay and Grant ask, "Princess, are you in here?" and the immediate reply is, "Of course I'm in here. Where are you?"

9. Ghostly Farm Boy

Ghostly Farm Boy
Photographer Neil Sandbach was taking pictures around a farm in Hertfordshire, England, when he captured this astounding picture. When Sandbach looked at the digital photo later, he couldn't believe his eyes; he was certain that he had not overlooked a child hanging around the farm that day.

He later asked the farm owners if they'd ever had any supernatural experiences there (he did not tell them about the photo), and the owners confirmed that they had witnessed the specter of a boy in white night clothes many times before. (Link | Photo)

10. Oklahoma Impound Lot Ghost

Oklahoma Impound Lot Ghost
One night in Oklahoma, there were three fatal car crashes that killed several people. The wrecked vehicles were taken to a local impound lot, and the employees there witnessed something amazing on their surveillance cameras: a white figure moving around the destroyed cars. Family members of one of the accident victims are certain that the figure is their loved one trying to give them a message.

The World’s Most Scariest Legends on Some Places

Places with dark and disturbing histories exist throughout the world. Visiting scary places is all about going to locations where the spirits of the dead still roam the world. Even scarier are those places infested with other worldly spirits that are not human.

The Screaming Tunnel, Warner Road

The-worlds-most-scariest-legends-on-some-places-001

A local legend recounts that the tunnel is haunted by the ghost of a young girl, who after escaping a nearby burning farm building with her clothing ablaze, died within its walls. Several variants of the legend exist locally, one version has the girl set on fire by her enraged father after he loses custody of his children after a nasty divorce. Another tells of a young girl being raped inside the tunnel and her body burned to prevent any evidence from being found. All variants involve a claim that a match struck within the tunnel’s recesses will produce the sound of the young girl’s dying screams, this purported phenomena is alleged to be the origin of the tunnel’s name.

Bessie Little Bridge, Dayton

The-worlds-most-scariest-legends-on-some-places-002

The ghost of a murdered girl named Bessie Little returns regularly to this bridge on Ridge Street. She was murdered there on August 27, 1896, by her boyfriend, Albert J. Frantz. Bessie was pregnant and Albert didn’t want to have to marry her, so he shot her in the head and arranged the scene to suggest a suicide. For some reason, however, he shot her twice, so it was obvious that she hadn’t done it to herself. On November 19, 1897, Albert J. Frantz #28896 was strapped into the electric chair at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus and put to death for first degree murder. Back in Montgomery County, Bessie Little’s ghost continues to haunt the bridge.

Ohio University, America

The-worlds-most-scariest-legends-on-some-places-003

Wilson Hall, famous for a girl (a supposed witch)who killed herself moments after writing satanic and supernatural things on the wall in her own blood. The five cemetaries that form a pentagram that surrounds the campus, with the administrative building being in the center of the devil’s sign. Washington Hall, which is famous for housing a team of basketball players who all died in a terrible crashm their ghosts still haunt the hall, and you can sometimes hear them dribbling. The catacombs of Jefferson Hall, where numerous ghost sightings have occurred. And finally, for The Ridges, an abandoned insane asylum that was known for thousands of labotamies and electro shock treatments. Also, a patient who disappeared, and was found five weeks later, her body decomposed onto the floor and left a stain that outlines her body. This stain can still be seen today.

Kelly Road, Ohioville, Pennsylvania

The-worlds-most-scariest-legends-on-some-places-004

A one-mile section of Kelly Road, Ohioville, Pennsylvania is an area that has had numerous reports of paranormal activity and bizarre happenings. Reports say that when animals have entered this haunted stretch of road they suddenly turn from peaceful and quiet to violent, going after other animals and even people. The road is surrounded by dark, thick and creepy forest where white apparitions and noises that can’t be explained have been seen and heard. No one is quite sure why this short section of road is haunted but theories suggest that is could be somehow connected to cult activity that was once taking place in the area and curses that have been put on the land for some reason.

Alcatraz Prison, San Francisco

The-worlds-most-scariest-legends-on-some-places-005

The island, believed to be an evil place by Native Americans, has seen centuries of death from accidents, murders, and suicides. With this dark history, it’s no wonder Alcatraz is said to be one of the most haunted places in the nation. If ghosts return to haunt the places where they suffered traumatic experiences when they were alive, then Alcatraz must be bursting at the seams with spirits. For years there have been reports of mysterious happenings on Alcatraz Island. These reports come from visitors, former guards, former prisoners, and national park service employees. From the original lighthouse reappearing on occasion to clanging, screaming, and sobbing, there are too many tales to put into this short article. It would definitely take a book to tell them all. Some of the strange occurences are recounted in the following paragraphs. The Lighthouse – There have been several reports that on foggy nights the old lighthouse, built in 1854 and torn down after it was damaged in the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake, will suddenly appear, accompanied by an eerie whistling sound and a flashing green light that makes its way slowly around the island and then vanishes as suddenly as it appears.

Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland

The-worlds-most-scariest-legends-on-some-places-006

This magnificent castle is typically medieval, perched atop a rocky crag, giving it an amazing vista of Scottish hills. But inside the empty halls and narrow streets of Edinburgh, there are the echoes of the dead. At least, that’s what has been reported. Hot spots for specters include the castle’s prison cells, the South Bridge vaults and Mary’s King Close, a disused street used to quarantine and eventually entomb victims of the plague. There are also reports of ghost dogs, a headless drummer, and the bodies of prisoners taken during the French seven-year war and the American War of Independence.

10 Ways To See Ghost

I just recently watch the chinese movie, The Eye 10. It’s about 10 ways to see ghost. The movie is just a so called horror movie. It’s a comedy for me  Anyway, here’s the 10 ways to see ghost.
  1. Cornea Transplant
It is claim that a person that got a cornea transplant from a dead person, the person can see ghost
  2. Suicide Attempt
A pregnant woman that attempts suicide can see ghost. Oh… that means males only have 9 ways to see ghost :P
  3. Oujia(not sure how to spell) board
I bet everyone heard of this. Place a cup or something and put your finger on top of it on a piece of paper full of letters. Then call the ghost to come and the ghost will answer all you question.
  4. Midnight Hide and Seek
Play hide and seek at night in a “dirty” place. The ghost will play with you too. When the ghost play with you, the ghost will block one of the hider so that everyone can’t see the hider. To make him appears again, the seeker have to use a black cat. The black cat will unblock the view somehow. Then, you will see both hider and the ghost.
  5. Dirt Mask
Dig up some soil from a dead men’s kubur (what do you call this in English?) and apply them to your eyes.
  6. Calling Hungry Ghost
I was laughing my ass off when I see this part in the movie. To call hungry ghost, you will need foods, bowl and chopsticks. Tap the bowl with chopstick, and that will attract hungry ghosts’ attention. They will go to your place and eat those food. Tapping must continue, or the ghost will be able to see you!! About the funny part in the movie, one guy tap the bowl until the bowl breaks. Desperately, he use his chopsticks and tap his teeth, which has similiar sounds to the bowl taps -_-”
  7. Midnight Hair Combing
Comb your hair midnight, in front of a mirror. You will see ghost that you desire.
  8. Opening Umbrella
Open your umbrella indoors. You will see ghost after that. My grandparents always disallow me to open umbrella indoors. Kinda like our taboo.
  9. Peek-A-Stoop
I’m not sure how’s it called, but that’s how the DVD i rented translated. Try to look behind you in between your legs, of course, you have to bend down.
  10. Play Dead
Dress up like a dead person and sleep. You will go to the ghost world. This part of the movie is funny too. It is said that ghost in the ghost world is afraid of you breath. Well, the keep on blew those like dragon blowing fire. The funny part is where the guy (the same guy that taps his teeth) accidently farted and the ghost fainted straight away
Seeing ghost with that 10 ways. I wonder if it is really possible…
